Congratulations to Samuel Bañuelos – Posse Foundation Scholar!

Samuel Bañuelos has been awarded a four year scholarship to Dickinson College (Carlise, PA) through the Posse Foundation.

The Posse Foundation is a college access and youth leadership development program that identifies, recruits and selects student leaders from public high schools and sends them in groups called Posses to the top colleges and universities in the country. A Posse is a multicultural team made up of 10 students. It acts as a support system to ensure that each Posse Scholar succeeds and graduates from college. Posse Scholars receive four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships from Posse partner colleges and universities. The Posse Scholarship is a full-tuition, four-year scholarship worth over $100,000.

Congratulations to Mr. Horvath and Team Snickers!

1st Place at Los Angeles Regional Competition

Mr. Daniel Horvath (Magnet – Physics) and Team Snickers, Hassan Jomaa (12M), Ibrahim Matar (12M), Brandon Mayorga (12M), and Manuel Robles (12M), competed in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Invention Challenge 2014.

The JPL Annual Invention Challenge is a friendly, yet challenging competition open to JPL employees and contractors, their family members, and students from local middle and high schools. Each year, a different engineering challenge is selected. The goal of the Invention Challenge is to show students that math, science, and engineering can be fun.

This year’s contest was called “Keep It Moving.” Teams had to create a device that can move a billiard ball at least 5 meters from the starting point using three or more different modes of transportation and then have the ball initiate a portion of the device that makes an audible sound exactly 20 seconds after starting. The winner will be the team whose device complies with all of the rules and completes the task closest to 20 seconds.

On November 22, 2014, Team Snickers competed in the Los Angeles Regional Invention Challenge and took first place with a time of 19.96 seconds. The win at the regional event, qualified the team to compete at the national event at JPL on December 5, 2014.
